Volunteer in Nepal

Volunteer in Nepal

The PUM has volunteer or internship program opportunities available on its own on going active project or through our partner organization into the beautiful Himalayan Backward Communities of Nepal. Volunteers have the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational and community aid programs. This will give you a chance to make an important contribution to the people of Nepal and while doing so gain an in depth experience of the country and its culture, which will stay with you the rest of your life.

Program:

The volunteer/ internship program opportunities are in the following areas:

Teaching English: In this program volunteers are placed in local schools to teach conversational English and reading classes to Nepali children. In Nepal, English is becoming more and more of a required skill for job placement, educational advancement and future success. Class size can range from 15 to 40 students. School runs from Sunday to Friday with Saturday off, students are between 4 and 16 years of age. To teach English at a Nepali school you don’t need to have formal teaching qualifications, just a good command of written and spoken English, plenty of enthusiasm and a lot of patience.

Health Education: Health volunteers will work within the health post in the Goli Gepchuka Solukhumbu. The main focus is on preventative measures by way of regular basic health checks, administering necessary childhood immunizations and teaching the children about health, personal hygiene and sanitation as a disease prevention method. Please note that for this program we prefer medical students or advanced degree holders. Depending on experience/qualifications, there are various roles health volunteers can undertake, however this is not a medical program and you should not expect to be performing any medical procedures. Volunteers are required to submit their resume/CV when making an application for this program.

Program Location

The placements are available in Solukhumbu District mainly but partly as per the necessity we also can arranged upon Katmandu. Placements are determined upon arrival with considerations of safety of volunteers and availability.

Program Requirements

Volunteers for this program must:

be 16 years or older

have no major health problems

adjustable capacity very much

Program Schedule

The volunteer program starts on the 1st of each month. The minimum placement period for the Teaching program is one month. The schools are closed during March, April, June, July and October so the teaching English program is limited during this period. Please note that September-November there are local festivals that can disrupt your program. An alternative placement can be arranged for this time in another program. If you are volunteering for month or less, we do not recommend starting your placement at this time of year. For those volunteering for a longer period of time, the festival does provide a great opportunity to interact with the local culture.
